NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal is an honorary deputy in Clayton County, Ga., but come 2020, he’ll be eyeing a much larger responsibility.
In an interview with WXIA in Atlanta, Shaq shot down the potential of running for mayor before revealing serious plans to run for sheriff.
Shaq is a resident Henry County in the Atlanta suburbs and he has a home in Florida. He hasn’t decided where his sheriff campaign will take place, but he’s setting out to bring people closer together.
He said:
“This is not about politics for me. This is something that I’ve always wanted to do. This is about bringing people closer together. When I was coming up, people loved and respected the police — the deputies. And I want to be the one to bring that back, especially in the community that I serve.”
Shaq obviously has limited day-to-day experience in law enforcement, so he’d plan to surround himself with more experienced advisors and staff.
We’ll have to wait and see if Sheriff Shaq becomes a reality in a few years.
